What Is A Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is a technique used to improve the appearance of skin on a patient’s face, neck, or hand by applying a chemical solution directly to the skin, exfoliating it and causing it to eventually peel off. The top layer of dead skin is removed to reveal fresh, regenerated skin that is smooth and less wrinkled! Chemical peels are a great treatment for patients who are trying to combat the effects of aging, or who want to address skin issues like sun damage, acne or pockmarks, age spots, freckles, dull and dehydrated skin, Rosacea, wrinkles, and poor skin tone or texture.

A chemical peel is one of the most cost-effective ways to improve the appearance of your skin. The potential result of the chemical peel depends on the type of chemical and technique used.

What a chemical peel can improve

  • Acne or acne scars

  • Fine lines and wrinkles

  • Irregular skin pigmentation

  • Rough skin and scaly patches

  • Certain scars

  • Sun-damaged skin

What a chemical peel can't do

  • Treat deep facial lines or wrinkles

  • Significantly tighten loose or sagging skin

  • Remove deep scars

Who is a good candidate for a chemical peel?

You may not be a good candidate for chemical peeling if you have:

  • A history of abnormal skin scarring

  • A naturally dark complexion or skin tone

  • A tendency to have extra pigmentation of your scars

  • Used certain acne treatments within the last year

  • Skin conditions or medications that make the skin more sensitive than normal

Are there any risks associated with chemical peels?

You should understand that all chemical peels carry some risks and uncertainties. While very rare, infection or scarring are risks of from chemical peeling treatments.

For people with certain skin types, there is a risk of developing a temporary or permanent color change in the skin either lightening or darkening.

Use of hormone medications or a family history of brownish discoloration on the face or in response to scar healing may increase the possibility of developing abnormal pigmentation.

If you have suffered from cold sores (herpes) in the past, there is a risk of reactivation. Be sure to ask your doctor to prescribe medication to reduce the risk of a flare up in response to the treatment.

What are the steps of a chemical peel procedure?

Chemical solutions are carefully applied to your skin to improve the texture by removing damaged outer layers.

The formula used by your doctor will be adjusted to meet your particular needs.

There are three types of chemical peels:

  • Light chemical peel - Subtle improvements at first, but that healthy glow will increase with more treatments

  • Medium chemical peel - Your skin will be noticeably smoother and fresher-looking

  • Deep chemical peel - Results are dramatic, but recovery takes the longest
